I am a Sydney-based oil painter whose work is inspired by a deep reverence for nature and its essential role in our health and happiness.
Growing up on an Australian bush property, I developed an early and enduring connection with the natural world. The delicate emergence of plants after rain, the earthy scent of the soil, and the breathtaking sunsets over the gum trees fostered in me a deep sense of belonging to the land - an inspiration that continues to drive my artistic practice.
With the beauty a central theme, I strive to elicit an emotional connection between the viewer and nature, evoking feelings of serenity, beauty, peace, and renewal. I aim to fill the canvas with the living breath of the landscape so the viewer can almost smell the eucalyptus, feel the dust rise after rain and sense the shimmer of light as it floods a valley at midday.
My work sits in dialogue with both Impressionist and Expressionist traditions, but is firmly my own, fluid, layered and infused with a luminosity that comes from years of living with the dazzling, uncompromising radiance of the Australian sun. My art is about surrender, surrendering to the endless variations of weather, light and place, a reminder that to live in Australia is to live in dialogue with the elements - sometimes gentle, sometimes harsh but always profound.
In Australia the sun does not simply shine, it drenches everything in a fierce radiance. The sea becomes a prism - bands of turquoise, pink, cobalt and glassy emerald slide into one another. This I seek to capture with bold decisive strokes.
The result is a fusion of recognizable landscapes with expressive brushstrokes and abstract colour work. This creates pieces that are both familiar and subtly abstract, strengthening the emotional bond between the viewer and the scene.
The goal is to foster a hypnotic dialogue between nature and the viewer, inviting introspection and a deeper connection with nature.
I combine traditional oil painting techniques with realism at the drafting stage, alongside a focus on the recession of space and colour experimentation. This allows me to create recognizable landscapes that also incorporate expressive brushstrokes and abstracted colour. The resulting work is both instantly familiar and subtly abstract, heightening the emotional connection to the subject.
The complexity of my compositions, the interplay of colour, and distinctive brushstrokes are intentionally ambiguous, achieved through fractured mark-making and explosive colour. The goal is to engage the viewer in a deeply hypnotic dialogue between nature and the self—a visual journey through intricate worlds of light, shade, colour, and form.
I invite you on a journey through Australia’s diverse landscapes - infused with a soft, ethereal quality - my paintings capture the harmony between land, light and life.
Noni Ruker Artist’s Bio
From an early age I drew. My first drawings were of the traditional South African houses called rondavels, little round houses with thatched roofs. I also drew animals such as seals and horses.
I went on to study art and then architecture and I have had a successful career as an urban designer in Sydney. Since attending City Art Institute in Sydney I have kept up a practice of painting landscapes, particularly seascapes and still life such as shells with watercolours, gouache and now I paint mainly in oils.
